A new book on the history of British smuggling undermines the cosy image of the maverick stashing brandy in a secret cave or fetching the odd bit of tobacco for the vicar.

'Smuggling in the British Isles - A History' claims that far from acting alone smugglers were organised on an industrial scale, violent to the point of murder and rarely used caves.
