The timing of the Tory backbench push for an EU referendum is "terrible", Conservative MP Nadhim Zahawi has said.
With an economic crisis in the EU and public sector reform in the pipeline, the time was not right to hold a referendum, he told John Humphrys.
"Brilliant strategies, badly timed and executed, end up in failure," he said.
