Are art exhibitions too crowded?

A new Leonardo exhibition is opening at The National Gallery in London tomorrow, promoted as a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to see nine of the old master's greatest works together for the first time.

With large crowds expected, arts editor Will Gompertz looks at whether the phenomenon of the blockbuster exhibition means that visitors are unable to appreciate the paintings .

Luke Syson, the curator of the exhibition, says you need to spend at least 10 minutes looking at each of Leonardo's painting. But the sheer amount of people at the exhibition is likely to give only a few seconds per painting for each visitor.

Royal Academy chief executive Charles Saumarez Smith points out however that there are a few "tricks of the trade" to avoid overcrowding.
