Is the resignation of European leaders over the last few days democracy at work or does it show a eurozone elite imposing their will over the heads of their voters?

John Redwood, a eurosceptic Tory MP, believes that the euro model is not fully democratic as "incoming governments have to do what the outgoing government has been told to do" and there is therefore "no choice or no hope".

But John Stevens, a pro-euro former Tory MEP, points out that the eurozone crisis has been caused by an imbalance between the power of the markets, which have become international, and the power of politics, which have remained national.

"That is the real threat to democracy," he says.
