There are no rhinos left in the wild in West Africa and 25% of mammals are at risk of extinction according to the latest global assessment of threatened plant and animal species published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

The organisation's Craig Hilton-Taylor explained that governments need "concerted and focused efforts to turn the situation around".

However, he does point out that there have been some successes, with some species being "down-listed" from extinct in the wild to rehabilitated.
