The prosperity gap between London and the south-east and the rest of the UK is widening according to accountants PWC.

The company's chief economist, John Hawksworth, explained that although there are pockets of deprivation in London, on the whole the capital has much less unemployment than the rest of the country.

This is helped, he says, by high house prices but also London's large service industry and the fact that the City of London and its banks were protected by a government bail-out.
