Today's programme has been reflecting on the economy. The bleak short-term prospects and also the long-term challenge; the supply-side changes that we need in order to point the economy in a somewhat different direction away from spending based on borrowing, to exports and investment.

This matters a lot in Leeds where there is still a strong manufacturing sector. If we can tilt the economy towards exporting industries, it will probably ease the regional imbalances too. Neil McLean, a lawyer who chairs the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) for what is called the Leeds City Region and Professor Karel Williams of the University of Manchester discuss the prospects for economic growth in the north of England
