This year saw an urgent appeal for food aid in the horn of Africa, where famine was declared.

A poignant time then for our guest editor, Mo Ibrahim, to pose the question why can't Africa feed itself given that we are told about 12% of the world's arable land is in the African continent?

The sad fact is that most of that land is not utilised and only a tiny fraction is irrigated. And high population growth means more mouths to feed and land divided into ever smaller portions.
