Rail commuters preparing to return to work after the Christmas break face fare rises of up to 11% from Monday, watchdog Passenger Focus says.

Anthony Smith of Passenger Focus told the programme that "every year it's the same news" with costs being "dumped on passengers year after year".

But Michael Roberts, CEO of the Association of Train Operating Companies, pointed out that not all fares are rising but some are "actually falling". He conceded, however, that costs are "higher than they should be".
