There is a "self-imposed glass ceiling" preventing female medical students from considering a career as a surgeon according to one top neurosurgeon.

Helen Fernandes, a consultant neurosurgeon at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge - where she was the first woman to be appointed - told Today presenter Sarah Montague that female students do not attempt to become surgeons because they believe their priorities do not "fit" with the role.
