The government says it is going to try to do something about the theft of metal by imposing a better registration of scrap metal dealers and the possibility of introducing a cashless system of paying for scrap.

Ian Hetherington, Director General of the British Metal Recycling Association, says that legislating to prevent small business and households from selling their scrap metal with cash is "fraught with problems" as people will immediately look for "ways around it".
