The Commons International Development Committee has issued its recommendations on how to spend international development aid.

Ruth Porter, from the Institute for Economic Affairs, believes the report is "unrealistic" in a number of ways, as there is no mention of the importance of free trade and of the limitations of aid, such as the fact local markets can be distorted.

Max Lawson, head of advocacy for Oxfam, says the interests of the poorest people is "paramount". It can be a good thing, he explains, to use foreign aid to "leverage" the politics and freedom of speech but we must ensure that the poorest people are not going to suffer.
