Tension continues to rise between the Pakistan People's Party government and the military over the so-called "memogate" scandal in which a former ambassador to the US is accused of asking for US help to restrain the military.

General Talat Masood, formerly of the Pakistan army, told the Today programme that he did not believe a military coup was on the cards.

The people of Pakistan "definitely want democracy to continue", he said, but the government is in a state of "paralysis" because it is trapped between rival powers of the military and judiciary.
