More than 4000 people -- including dozens of Britons, the Foreign Office believes -- were on board the Costa Concordia when the ship hit a sandbar off the island of Giglio, off the coast of Tuscany last night.

Fabio Costa, who worked in a shop on the stricken cruise ship, said a lot of people were falling around on the deck as the boat was sinking and a number were jumping into the sea to try to swim to shore.
