MPs on the Commons Justice Select Committee have called for a new, less complex law on gang-related killings, raising concerns over "joint enterprise" convictions, which allow the prosecution of several people for one crime.

Joint enterprise was partly driven by the death of Tyrone Clarke, who was stabbed by a group of attackers in Leeds in 2004.

His mother, Lorraine Fraser, told the Today programme that she was fiercely opposed to anyone in a gang calling for the principle of collective responsibility being diluted.

"All of them members that are crying out they should not be in prison - they should be right where they are, because they took part... whatever part they took, that person died.

"And I'm sorry, I fought long and hard for this law, and it isn't just for my son, it's for all those families out there who've lost their loved ones.

"And when it gets to court they all say 'well I didn't do it'. Well I'm sorry someone's responsible, so yes, you are in a group, you go out there, and you take someone's life - you're all going down for murder. And that is the kind of law we need in this country."
