The biggest event in African football, the African Cup of Nations, kicks off today.

Musa Okwonga, a poet and sports writer, says that football in Equatorial Guinea where the event is taking place is most likely corrupt. But he adds that there are also "great positives" with newly democratic countries such as Zambia and Botswana attending.

Jonathan Wilson, editor of the football quarterly The Blizzard, says that there has been a lot of progress form individual players but because of a combination of "incompetence", "corruption" and a lack of infrastructure, national teams haven't gone forward.

He believes that so many politicians get involved with African teams that people have "lost sight" with how to develop footballers. The goal should be to develop local coaches instead of having European ones, he adds.
