Official figures show that the number of police officers in England and Wales has fallen to its lowest level for a decade.

Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper told the Today programme that the government is being "deeply complacent about the sheer scale of cuts" to police forces in England and Wales.

But police minister Nick Herbert insisted that they are still committed to protecting front line police services and that they "expect that front line police officers will actually increase" throughout the spending review.
