EU leaders will meet in Brussels on Monday as talks about reducing Greek debt remain unresolved, with fears that a disorderly default could happen in March.

Former chancellor Lord Lamont said nervousness has replaced "total despair". The euro could get through this year, he believed, but its future remains uncertain beyond that.

On the subject of a possible EU outsider being sent to Greece to manage the country's finances, Baroness Vadera, who worked for Gordon Brown at the Treasury, said the idea is an "extraordinary" and "dangerous" move. To send in an external force to impose conditions "which are impossible" is "asking for disaster", she added.
