Sir Salman Rushdie was recently prevented from speaking at a literature festival, while the government is trying to force Facebook, Google and other websites to remove anything from their pages it does not approve of - and threatening China-like blocking if they do not comply.

It has lashed out at programmes like the BBC's Top Gear and US comedy show host Jay Leno for briefly employing an image of the Sikh golden temple in one of his sketches.
