The Health and Social Care Bill is expected to face a rough ride from peers when it returns to the House of Lords today, less than a week after the Royal College of GPs wrote to David Cameron calling for it to be scrapped.

The shadow health secretary, Andy Burnham, says the bill marks a "big break" with NHS history. His fear is that this will squeeze NHS patients out, with a return to the "bad old days" of the health service.

He thinks the bill can be defeated as the government has failed to build a political and professional consensus behind the bill.
