RBS chief executive Stephen Hester has said that he believed he deserved his bonus, but took the judgement that accepting it would have been damaging for RBS.

Speaking to Today presenter James Naughtie, he said that the "societal issues of what people earn in different walks of life... is a political debate and I'm a businessman".

"Other people decide what to pay me," he said.
