A report in the Lancet says an infusion of cardiac stem cells into patients who had heart attacks can help regenerate healthy heart muscle.

Authors say the discovery "challenges the conventional wisdom that, once established, cardiac scarring is permanent and that, once lost, healthy heart muscle cannot be restored".

Professor Eduardo Marban of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles explains what they found.
