Support for independence in Wales remains low at 7%, rising to 12% if Scotland were to become independent according to a BBC/ICM poll.

Hywel Williams, Welsh historian and commentator. claims that the low figure for independence is due to "extreme passivity" and a lack of lack of intellectual engagement with the concept of nationalism.

He adds that greater Welsh autonomy would only come about if Wales achieves greater economic independence and is free from an "intellectually lazy, public sector middle class".

However, Eurfyl Ap Gwilym, economics adviser to Plain Cymru, believes that the important issue that this poll highlights is the growing support for more Welsh Assembly powers over taxation.

This, he adds, is a sign of a "maturing" Wales.
