Iconic weekly music magazine New Musical Express is celebrating its 60th birthday.

From humble beginnings in mainstream pop, the magazine came to be a bible of teenage cool, throwing its weight behind rebellious rock from punk to 1990s indie.

The music broadcaster Mark Coles, an NME reader since he was 13, charts the magazine's rise.
