Plans by the prime minister to tackle "absurd barriers to mixed-race adoption" in proposals to speed up adoptions in England have been welcomed as "the best news ever".

Joy Carter, a comedian who was adopted in Nigeria by a white couple, said that there are over 6000 children in the queue for adoption and "the longer you are in the queue the more psychological issues develop".

The issue had to be considered, she told the Today programme's Justin Webb, in the context of children for whom "some catastrophic situation has already happened".

"Sitting around in an orphanage waiting to be adopted" she said, does not give children a "fighting chance" in life.

While she had found some aspects of her own childhood difficult, having stability and hope in a loving family "far outweighs all the grown-up issues hands down".
