A British woman who is considering having her hand cut off and replaced with a bionic one, described how "excruciating pain" is driving her to seek out this elective procedure.

Nicola Wilding, who lost the use of a hand in a car crash, described how she was in contact with an Austrian doctor to replace her hand which, she said, "is useless to me" and gets in the way.

Alleviating the pain that she has had for 13 years would be a "massive change" in her life, she continued.

She told the Today programme's Sarah Montague that there are "always risks" but she is prepared to take them if it helps her.

"I'm not averse to problems, it's just part of life", she said, adding "I wouldn't miss it".
