Every decade a band is declared the saviour of rock and roll as they raid the past for a stripped down, rhythm and blues style.

At the moment an American band called Alabama Shakes his picked up the baton, once carried by the White Stripes and, if you go back to the 1970s, the Essex rockers Dr Feelgood.

Forty years on, Dr Feelgood's former lead guitarist and songwriter Wilko Johnson has an autobiography coming out and the band's early records are about to be re-released.

The music broadcaster Mark Coles visited Wilko at home where he heard about how the band was started and its ultimate demise.

"This thing we were doing was running counter to what a record company thought a band could be", he told Mark Coles.

He said he felt that they were "spearheading" a rhythm and blues revival.
