The film industry has had tax breaks for years and now the gaming industry, which is now bigger than movies, got good news from the Chancellor yesterday after he announced a tax relief of £15m, which would rise to £35m next year, for the industry.

It is designed to stop jobs leaving UK shores for places like Canada after Britain has slipped from the third biggest games maker to sixth and the number of people working in the industry has fallen by 10 percent.

Jas Purewal, a lawyer specialising in interactive entertainment at the firm Osborne Clark, told the Today programme's Simon Jack that these are increasingly mobile industries and the UK has suffered because of this so these tax breaks should help to stop that.

He said that singling out these creative industries recognises the importance of them to the economy and pointed out the difficulties in raising finance is particularly acute for companies in this sector.

"This is a growth measure", Mr Purewal said, adding that it was "intended to facilitate growth for the future".
