The Home Secretary, Theresa May, says she is still working to obtain assurances from Jordan that will enable the deportation of the radical Muslim cleric, Abu Qatada. He is wanted there to face terror charges. His removal was previously blocked by the the European Court of Human Rights over fears that evidence obtained by torture could be used against him.

Today presenter John Humphrys asked Mrs May whether, if the government was satisfied he could get a fair trial, she would defy the European court:

"What I'm working on is getting the assurances that do enable us to deport Abu Qatada," she explained.

"That's my aim because if I do it in that way then I can assure that the deportation is sustainable. And that's what I want to ensure, once Abu Qatada is deported from the UK, he remains deported from the UK."
