Journalist, columnist, novelist, playwright, screenwriter: Keith Waterhouse was a British one-off.

Now this summer, more than two and a half years after his death, the British Library is to display parts of Waterhouse's prolific output as part of a wider exhibition, Writing Britain: Wastelands to Wonderlands .

Manuscripts of novels and short stories - published and otherwise - along with letters and even plans for board games have been donated to the library by the Waterhouse family.

The Today programme's Andrew Hosken took a tour of the exhibition.

And Waterhouse's friend and colleague at the Daily Mail, Jaci Stephen, described how her "wonderful" friend was "an incredible wordsmith with the right word in the right place".

"He was able to write about anything," she explained, adding that celebrity culture has destroyed Keith Waterhouse's type of writing.
