Jim Marshall, the man known as The Father of Loud, has died in London aged 88. Harry Shearer, co-creator of Spinal Tap and fan of Jim Marshall, describes the contribution of the Marshall amp to rock and roll music.

Mr Shearer explained to the Today programme's Evan Davis that what distinguished the Marshall amp from others is that that it did not just deliver "an auditory experience" but a very real "physical experience" which he attributes to being Marshall's "greatest accomplishment".

He added that the "mighty Marshall" had become an "iconic piece of equipment" for all rock and roll fans.
