The first observers from the UN are starting work in Syria, where they are monitoring the fragile ceasefire.

Journalists do not have free access to the country but the BBC's Ian Pannell managed to cross the border to report from Idlib province in the north of the country.

There he spoke to people, under the protection of the Free Syrian Army, who had little faith the peace would hold.

"Our children, brothers, and sisters are being killed, we have no more emotion left in our hearts," one mother told him.

"Our children are orphans. Kofi Annan can't bring their fathers back."
