Tesco is to invest £1bn in its UK business this year in an attempt to revive its flagging domestic operation.

Chief executive Philip Clarke told the Today programme's Evan Davis that the business had "taken too much away from customers" in terms of service.

He had been "walking the shop floor" with colleagues where "no aspect of the business can escape the scrutiny", he said.

"Retail is about the detail," he said, explaining plains to rejuvenate stores and recruit an extra 8000 staff into existing stores.
