For the first time, cameras are to be allowed into the High Court in Edinburgh to film the sentencing of convicted murderer David Gilroy.

Gilroy's sentencing, after he was convicted of killing a woman he was having an affair with, will be filmed and broadcast but only the judge and two court staff will be shown.

Brian McConnachie QC, vice-chair of the Faculty of Advocates Criminal Bar Association, said that the move should be encouraged because it provides an opportunity for the general public to have greater access to courts and judicial system.

"It would be educational and informative for the general public," he said.

But Sir Roger Gale, MP for North Thanet, said that it was the "thin end of a wedge".

"We are told it is about democracy," he said "but it's about show business and entertainment".
