Scientists are developing a satellite navigation system especially for nervous elderly drivers as part of a government-funded project at Newcastle University.

Professor Phil Blythe, who is leading the research, told the Today programme's John Humphrys that they have been trying to find out the issues facing older drivers.

He said that they discovered that not being able to turn your neck for blind spots and looking for visual cues in order to know when to turn were some of the things that people talked about.

The sat nav will have a feature which only shows routes using left turns and Professor Blythe explained that older drivers told developers that they "plan journeys with as many left turns as possible" because of concerns over judging distance of oncoming traffic when turning right.
