The British Library are inviting people with World War I memorabilia to come to roadshows to have their belongings digitised for the Europe-wide digital museum Europeana.
The roadshows have already elicited some fascinating artefacts, including this bible which saved Kurt Geiler's life.
German infantryman Geiler (pictured left) always carried his Bible with him and it saved him from an explosion which hit his dugout, killing or injuring his fellow soldiers.
Other items include a postcard from Nuremberg from Adolf Hitler to a friend and fellow soldier during World War I.
The postcard was sent to Karl Lanzhammer just after Hitler was wounded, explaining that he was undergoing dental treatment and would report back for voluntary duty as soon as possible.
Personal accounts of the war have also been saved, including John Stafford's recollection of being left for dead for two days at the Somme before being rescued.
And love stories have been recorded too, including the tale of Joseph Heapes, who became penpals with Mary Fearon while he was a PoW in Germany, returning to Ireland to marry her after the war.
