The board of the country's fourth-biggest Spanish bank, Bankia, will hold a news conference this morning explaining why they need a 19 billion euro lifeline from the Spanish government.

A fruit and veg wholesaler told the BBC's Tom Burridge in Madrid that banks don't give him the money he needs to pay his employees and the bills. 'Banks... you knock on the door and they don't open', he said.

A student in construction management who is leaving Spain to find work abroad said 'we were living in a dream and now we're paying for it'.
