The latest indications show that the run off for the Egyptian presidency will be between the candidate of the Muslim Brotherhood, Mohammed Mursi, and the last prime minister to be appointed by President Mubarak before he was deposed, Ahmed Shafiq.

Mona Makram-Ebeid, a member of the advisory council to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces which has been running the country, told the Today programme's James Naughtie that she found the results a "very surprising choice", "nobody expected these two candidates".

She says there is a fear that both candidates will "polarise the country". "It's a wrenching choice for the voters", she believes, "the next 10 days will see a lot of negotiations and pacts".

"The road ahead is quite bumpy", she warns.
