The BBC has learnt that the government is on the brink of making two budget u-turns on the so-called "pasty tax" and caravan tax.

Stephen Gilbert MP, a liberal democrat backbencher, told the Today programme that he's "delighted that they came forward with these alternative proposals". "It's refreshing to have been able to engage with the government on this issue", he said.

Giving his analysis of the U-turn, Nick Robinson told John Humphrys the U-turns on the pasty tax and caravan "were done in part to satisfy editors of newspapers" and they are the price politicians pay "to try and persuade the Tory press to become Tory again".
