Lord Browne, former chief executive of British Petroleum, told business editor Robert Peston that being gay and working in business in the 1960s was was "terrifying".

He said he to lead a "private secret life" which was "a little grain of personal terror".

"You had to live with that cloud over your head... which was a very strange position", he explained.
