Argentina's president has asked for talks with Britain on the Falklands sovereignty before a United Nations committee on the 30th anniversary of Britain's defeat of an Argentine invasion force.

Roger Edwards, member of the Falklands Legislative Assembly, points out that the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands is written into the Argentine constitution, saying it is their islands, so "any negotiations has a pre-determined outcome".

Speaking to the Today programme, he said that the Argentine claim is based on "myth and rumour" which dates back to 1985.

The long term way out of this, he says, would be for Argentina to "stop hitting us over the head with a stick".
