The adult human population has a combined weight of 287,000,000 tonnes, according to new research.

Scientists from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine say that increasing obesity could have the same impact on global resources as an extra billion people living on the planet.

Professor Ian Roberts, who led the research, says the "whole world is getting fatter".

"It's not about obesity, it's about fatness," he told the Today programme, saying that if every country becomes as fat as the US, it is the equivalent of feeding another half a billion people.
