The Queen will today meet with ex-IRA commander Martin McGuinness to share an historic handshake.

Roy Foster, Carroll Professor of Irish History at Oxford, believes this is an important landmark in relations between the two nations. "A lot is going to have to be forgotten for this handshake to take place," he warned.

"I think if you're a head of state your own feelings have to be put strictly into cold storage."
