The Conservative MP Jesse Norman was advised to "get out of Westminster" on Tuesday night after he had voted against the government on Lords reform.

"It gets way beyond just simply having a talking to and a telling off, and that's where the line has been crossed," argued former Labour MP Paul Marsden, who experienced violence from a whip during his time in office.

"People do get a bit carried away," agreed ex-Conservative whip Gyles Brandreth, but contested that this isn't standard practice. "The weapons at the whips' disposal are much more subtle."
