More than £9bn is to be spent improving the rail network as part of a government attempt to boost the economy.

Justine Greening explains that the aim is also to improve reliability of the services through electrification of the network.

Speaking to the Today programme, she defends privatisation of the rail network saying that the last thing train companies need is "everything thrown up in the air".

"Affordability is key", she told John Humphrys and explained that "as we get those efficiencies coming through, we will put them towards getting rid of above inflation prices," however she concedes that "for the time being, passengers are paying".
