The Mayor of London says he is "as pleased as he could possibly be at this stage" with the running of the Olympic Games.

Speaking to the Today programme, Boris Johnson said that on Saturday night when Great Britain and Northern Ireland won three gold medals in the space of less than an hour there was an "unleashing of a really extraordinary positive energy".

He told Evan Davis that he believes it is important to "keep the forward momentum" and "make sure we get kids motivated to take up... sporting opportunities."

A year after the riots that hit parts of England last year, Johnson believes sport and the Olympics can "play a role" in preventing such public disorder from happening again.

"The Olympics with this very clear message about effort and achievement... could not come at a better time," he said.
