Critics saying the government is allowing some rail fares to rise by three times faster than average salaries, with demonstrations being held at stations across the country in protest.

Richard Hebditch, director of the Campaign for Better Transport, said the proposals - varying slightly across England, Scotland and Wales for next year - were "very worrying".

He said they would be "very tough for ordinary people" and damaging to the economy as he was asked about the balance between the government and passengers paying for work on the railways.
