Ecuador's president is to decide whether to grant wikileaks founder Julian Assange political asylum.

He has been in its London embassy since June, after Britain agreed to extradite him to Sweden where he faces allegations of sexual assault.

Extradition expert Julian Knowles, a QC at Matrix Chambers, said the allegations against him were not political, and would not normally be given political asylum by most countries.

He explained how the Metropolitan Police would be set to arrest Mr Assange as soon as he left the embassy for a plane to Ecuador, and it was "unknown territory" what would happen if officers were to attempt to hold him if he had been given asylum.
