Tony Blackburn lamented the change in policy over Radio 1 jingles, as they will no longer be sung, claiming they give stations a "fresh and fabulous sound".

After a montage of jingles dating from its 1967 launch, the former Radio 1 Breakfast DJ said he moved from Radio Caroline to the BBC to introduce jingles, which were only heard on American stations at the time.

He also told Today's Sarah Montague that Radio 4 should bring in its own "fun fun fun" jingle package.

Mr Blackburn said the new Radio One jingle policy - to coincide with Nick Grimshaw taking over as its new breakfast presenter - was a mistake, and the singing-style of jingles would be "sadly missed". He claimed some DJs do not know how to use jingles but added: "When used properly, they do make a programme and a station."
