Miners in South Africa have been given until today to return to work at the Marikana platinum mine.

Daniel Litvin, director of advisory firm Critical Resource, said that mining companies in developing countries have a "very negative historic legacy of exploitation, corruption, and environmental mismanagement... they have a legacy to overcome".

He told the Today programme that mining companies need to strike partnerships with donor agencies, with civil society and with local communities.

Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, former chairman of mining group Anglo American, told Evan Davis that "any company in any country has a responsibility to operate to ethical principals".

He said that this can become more difficult "when governance is weak".
